Highs and Sighs: 2026 Norton Manx R
The resurrection of Norton Motorcycles under the ownership of India’s TVS Motor Company has officially arrived, and it starts with the new 2026 Norton Manx R. Positioned as a "real-world" sportbike, the Manx R steps away from the hyper-aggressive track replicas dominating today's market, choosing instead to target mid-range usability and sophisticated engineering.
In my First Ride Review of the Manx R, I go into all the details about what the bike is and how it’s like to ride. For those who want to get straight to the point: it’s a very impressive machine considering the revived Norton’s infancy. But it’s not perfect by any means. Here are three major positives and three negatives to note about the Manx R.
High: A Mega 1,200cc V4 Engine
The all-new 1,200cc, 72-degree, liquid-cooled V4 engine is nothing short of mega. While others chase peak horsepower at the expense of everyday rideability, this powerplant was intentionally tuned for real-world roads. Ironically, it still pumps out a claimed 206 horsepower, and the engine delivers a massive 80% of its 96 lb-ft of torque at just 7,000 rpm. Its "Phased Pulse" firing order helps the tire maintain mechanical traction before electronic aids kick in. And of course, the distinctive, roaring V4 soundtrack is always a crowd favorite.
High: Sophisticated Looks
In an era where superbikes are cluttered with aggressive winglets and sharp, angry lines, the Manx R is a breath of fresh air. Simon Skinner, Norton’s head of design, had a "gentleman's sportbike" aesthetic in mind, likening it to an Aston Martin sitting among loud Lamborghinis. I know looks are subjective, but with its balanced proportions and smooth lines flowing seamlessly from the fairing to the compact tail section, I don’t think the pictures do its sleek, winglet-free silhouette justice.
High: Incredible Braking Performance
When it comes to stopping power, Norton spared no expense, anchoring the Manx R with top-tier Brembo components. The bike features Brembo’s flagship Hypure monobloc calipers clamping down on 320mm floating discs. Backed by stainless steel braided lines, radial master cylinder, and Bosch Cornering ABS EVO system, Norton claims the Manx R can achieve up to 1G of stopping power — and considering how impressed I was with the binders, I believe it.
Sigh: Restricted Electronic Control
While the Manx R comes loaded with a comprehensive electronics package — including traction control, wheelie control, slide control, and an 8-inch TFT touchscreen — the software does not give the rider absolute, granular control. For the sportbike enthusiast who likes to completely customize individual rider aids, the bike's safety interventions can feel slightly too restrictive, which might aggravate some riders.
Sigh: A Price Tag "Not for the Faint of Heart"
The short of it is this: The Manx R does not come cheap — at least not in this top-tier Signature Edition trim with carbon fiber bits, semi-active suspension, and other bits. The Manx R’s price tag (still TBD in the US at press time, but expected to be around $50,000 for the Signature Edition tested here) is what brought it down in the value metric of the MO Scorecard, but if you’re already shopping in this category of motorcycle, we have a feeling you’re not overly concerned about the price tag.
Sigh: A Sparse Dealer Network
Buying a premium motorcycle is one thing; maintaining it is another. Prospective owners will initially face a very sparse dealer network. Although Norton is strategically rolling out 25 initial dealerships in the United States by the end of the year — mostly targeting coastal and southern regions — anyone living outside of major metropolitan hubs will have to travel a long way to find authorized service and support. The intent is to expand, of course, but that will take time.
The Verdict
The 2026 Norton Manx R isn't trying to beat its European competitors around a closed circuit, and that is exactly why it's refreshing. If you can get over some electronic restrictions, a steep price, and a growing dealer network, the actual motorcycle underneath you is exhilarating — and it all centers around the V4 engine. The torque, the sound, and the overall performance is loads of fun, and the supporting cast around it is equally up to the job of having a good time.
