Ducati Collezione 100 DesertX 100 Gallery
A Unique Product Placement History
The livery of the DesertX 100 draws its direct inspiration from the graphics of the 1981 Pantah “Ice,” representing one of the most fascinating and notable examples of product placement in Ducati's history.
The original Pantah “Ice” was a uniquely modified Pantah 500. To optimize it specifically for ice tracks, the machine was fitted with unusual studded tires, and its entire braking system was completely removed.
During this era, Ducati was managed by state-owned holdings that simultaneously controlled major Italian automotive brands, including Alfa Romeo. In the early 1980s, EFIM — the governing body overseeing both Ducati and Alfa Romeo — organized a dedicated racing championship for Alfasud cars on the ice tracks of the Alps. These automotive races were split into two heats. To keep the crowd entertained during the intermission between the first and second heats, the brightly colored Pantah “Ice” motorcycles took to the ice, putting on a spectacular, high-flying show for the spectators.
The “Ice” bikes were built in a variety of vibrant color schemes. The specific yellow livery with blue stripes selected for the DesertX 100 is replicated from a historical model that, until just a few years ago, was proudly showcased as part of the official Ducati Museum collection.
