A Historic Tribute
The design of the Panigale V4 S 100 draws direct inspiration from the historic motorcycle that claimed victory at the inaugural Imola 200 Miles race in 1972, piloted by riders Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari.
The original 750 Imola Desmo evolved from Ducati’s premier twin-cylinder road bike, the 750 GT. While it maintained the core mechanical layout of the 750 GT, the Imola variant introduced the signature desmodromic distribution system (which the GT lacked) and integrated the bodywork of the 500 GP premier-class racing bike. Its distinct "glittery" silver paint job—influenced by the popular sci-fi aesthetics of the era—was initially utilized on Ducati’s 250 and 350 Desmo single-cylinder production models before being adapted for the 500 GP and, ultimately, the 750 Imola Desmo.
Triumph and Legacy
The Imola victory was a monumental, surprise achievement for the Borgo Panigale manufacturer, representing their very first win over legendary racer Giacomo Agostini. The widespread acclaim of Smart and Spaggiari's historic 1-2 finish skyrocketed Ducati's popularity. In direct response to intense public demand, Ducati launched the 1973 750 Supersport Desmo the following year, marking the brand's first-ever production twin-cylinder desmodromic road bike.
