Spec Chart Comparison: Honda Rebel 1100 vs. Harley-Davidson Nightster
When you think of a metric cruiser going toe-to-toe with an American icon, it’s usually a completely one-sided battle — of course American Iron wins every time? Or does it? Here at Motorcycle.com, we like to look at the cold, hard numbers. If you are in the market for a modern, mid-displacement cruiser and have about 10-large burning a hole in your pocket, two bikes likely sit at the top of your shortlist: the Honda Rebel 1100 and the Harley-Davidson Nightster.
Both machines break away from their respective brands' traditional cruiser molds, utilizing high-tech, liquid-cooled engines nestled in sporty, aggressive chassis. To see how they stack up, we strapped them to the Motorcycle.com dyno, rolled them onto our official scales, and analyzed the technical specifications. We call it a spec chart comparison and it’s the perfect bench racing fodder for you to talk about and dissect while we toil away putting the actual comparison test together.
Powerplants
At the heart of this matchup are two very different approaches to liquid-cooled propulsion. Honda utilizes its venerable 1,083cc Unicam parallel-Twin, an engine platform borrowed from the Africa Twin and tuned here for cruiser duty. Harley-Davidson answers with the Revolution Max 975T, a high-revving, 60-degree V-Twin pushing 975cc of displacement.
While manufacturers love to boast about crankshaft horsepower numbers, we think our rear-wheel dyno test is a more relevant data point to consider. The Harley's RevMax engine loves to rev, but it ultimately gets out-muscled by the larger Honda throughout nearly the entire rev range. On the dyno, the Nightster put down a peak of 76.0 hp at 6,900 rpm and 63.5 lb-ft of torque at 6,000 rpm. Looking closely at the dyno chart, the Nightster suffers from a noticeable dip in both horsepower and torque between 3,000 and 3,600 rpm before climbing back up to its peak.
The Honda Rebel 1100 takes the crown in pure performance, delivering a broader, smoother, and more robust powerband. The Rebel laid down a peak of 78.3 hp at 7,000 rpm and a stout 67.4 lb-ft of torque at a low 4,800 rpm. The Rebel also has a small dip in power around 3,600 rpm — we’re not sure whether that’s a coincidence or a strategic play from both brands to pass regulatory scrutiny. Unlike the Harley, which requires you to chase the redline to find its power, the Honda offers a massive wall of torque right where cruiser riders spend most of their time. Furthermore, the Nightster hits an abrupt electronic wall just past 7,000 rpm, whereas the Rebel carries its power much further, revving out aggressively past 8,000 rpm (though there is a 100 mph speed governor).
As far as fuel economy goes, you might expect the bigger engine in the Honda to use more gas — but you’d be wrong. Our calculated MPG (under heavy right wrists…) shows the Rebel 1100 returning 39.4 mpg, while the Nightster got 34.3 mpg. Maybe it was because the Harley had to rev higher to keep up? Whatever the reason, more reasonable pilots will likely yield better results on either bike.
Transmission and Drivetrain
Our Honda Rebel 1100 test unit came equipped with the standard 6-speed manual transmission rather than the optional Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). This levels the playing field perfectly, pitting manual against manual. We did have a DCT version briefly, which impressed Ryan more than he thought it would.
No such options exist for the Harley-Davidson Nightster and its 6-speed gearbox, a cable-operated assist-and-slip clutch, and a clean, maintenance-free belt final drive. It feels mechanically engaging in the way a traditional cruiser should.
The manual Rebel 1100 delivers crisp, precise gear engagement that handles the engine's heavy torque with ease. However, unlike the Harley's clean belt drive, the Rebel utilizes an old-school chain final drive. This means Rebel owners will be busting out the chain lube and adjusting tension during regular maintenance intervals, giving the Harley a slight edge in ownership convenience.
Chassis and Dimensions
When it comes to handling geometry, minor differences on a spec sheet translate to massive changes on the road. The Honda Rebel 1100 features a tight 59.8-inch wheelbase and a sporty (comparatively speaking) 28.0-degree rake. Combined with a 27.5-inch seat height, it is flat-foot friendly and offers lightning-fast steering transitions.
The Harley-Davidson Nightster is visibly longer and pushed out, stretching to a 60.8-inch wheelbase with a more conservative 30.0-degree rake. With a 27.8-inch seat height and a longer footprint, on paper anyway.
While the manufacturers' claimed curb weights suggested a gap between these two machines, the truth came out when we rolled them onto the Motorcycle.com scales. Ready to ride with full fuel tanks, both bikes weighed in at an identical 492 pounds. With the weight penalty completely neutralized, the handling battle comes down entirely to geometry.
The backbone of any motorcycle is its frame, and both brands have chosen a trellis design, albeit with completely different execution. The Honda Rebel 1100 utilizes a classic, clean steel trellis frame paired with a stout tubular swingarm.
Harley-Davidson takes a far more complex, high-tech approach with the Nightster. It features a steel trellis frame, but incorporates stamped, cast, and forged junctions that are MIG welded to a forged aluminum mid-structure. The mild steel rectangular tube section swingarm completes a package where the engine itself acts as a structural element of the chassis. This configuration maximizes rigidity while minimizing bulk.
Suspension
When it comes to absorbing the imperfections of urban streets and canyon roads, the Rebel 1100 boasts a 43mm conventional telescopic fork with adjustable preload and a slick dark titanium oxide coating, serving up 5.5 inches of travel. Out back, dual Showa shocks with adjustable preload feature piggyback pressurized reservoirs, giving you 3.7 inches of travel.
The Nightster features 41mm Showa Dual Bending Valve conventional fork up front with aluminum triple clamps, giving you 4.5 inches of travel. The rear relies on a pair of dual outboard shocks with a threaded collar for preload adjustment offering up 3.0 inches of travel.
Brakes
Slowing these 492-pound machines down requires solid hardware, and here the components show a clear hardware disparity. The Honda Rebel 1100 has a 330mm floating disc clamped by a radial-mount, four-piston monobloc caliper. The rear is handled by a single-piston caliper and a 256mm rotor.
The Harley-Davidson Nightster uses an axially mounted 4-piston caliper biting down on a slightly smaller 320mm single disc. The Nightster does carry a slightly larger rear brake, however, utilizing a floating single-piston caliper with a 260mm rotor. Both motorcycles come standard with ABS, but the Harley-Davidson uses components from Brembo, including the steel-braided brake lines, which the Honda doesn’t have.
Wheel and Tire Sizes
The visual attitude and handling behavior of these cruisers are significantly shaped by their rubber. The Harley-Davidson Nightster goes for an old-school, skinny chopper-esque stance. It rolls on a taller, narrower 19-inch front aluminum cast wheel wrapped in a 100/90-19 Dunlop Harley-Davidson Series D401F tire, combined with a 16-inch rear wheel wearing 150/80B16 rubber.
The Honda Rebel 1100 favors a modern, muscular, and aggressive footprint. It sports a smaller but wider 18-inch front cast wheel with five Y-shaped spokes, running a beefy 130/70-18 tire. On the rear, it matches the Harley's 16-inch wheel size but mounts a significantly wider 180/65-16 tire.
Ownership: Warranties, Service Intervals, and Valve Inspections
Long-term ownership cost and convenience are where these two bikes present a fascinating trade-off between warranty protection and garage maintenance.
Harley-Davidson provides a 24-month, unlimited-mileage warranty, doubling the 12-month warranty offered by Honda. Additionally, the Nightster's service intervals are less frequent: after the initial 1,000-mile checkup, it only requires service every 5,000 miles. The Honda Rebel 1100 requires its break-in service at 600 miles, followed by regular maintenance every 4,000 miles.
However, the tables turn when it comes to engine maintenance. The Harley’s Revolution Max 975T features hydraulic self-adjusting lifters, meaning valve inspections are virtually non-existent for the life of the motor. The Honda Rebel's Unicam parallel-Twin, on the other hand, requires a mechanical valve inspection every 16,000 miles. While it’s not a difficult task, there’s definitely more labor involved in checking and shimming valves when compared to the Harley. Maintenance expenses like valve checks won’t be frequent, but Rebel owners must plan for it down the road.
The Verdict
On the dyno and paper, the Honda Rebel 1100 proves to be a performance powerhouse. It out-muscles the Nightster everywhere on the dyno chart, provides better suspension travel, stops with radial-mount precision, and steers sharper thanks to its tighter wheelbase — all while coming in with a lower starting MSRP ($9,699 vs. $9,999).
The Harley-Davidson Nightster fights back as a compelling premium package. It matches the manual Honda pound-for-pound on our scales, offers a superior 2-year warranty, features a maintenance-free belt drive, and completely eliminates the hassle of valve adjustments thanks to its hydraulic lifters. If you value classic styling, longer service intervals, and American V-Twin character, the Nightster makes a phenomenal case for itself.

Gas tanks on both of them are too small. You ride from gas station to gas station and will never have an opportunity for a scenic ride without worrying about where the next fill up will come from.
Both have the ugliest exhaust systems on the planet. Possibly in history.
