50 Years of BMW RS Models – Gallery
In 1976, BMW debuted the R 100 RS at IFMA, its first in a line of "Reise und Sport" (German for "Travel and Sport") models, setting the template for what we today call sport-touring models. With a frame-mounted wind tunnel-tested fairing and sporty Boxer engine, the R 100 RS started a lineage of RS models that carries on, now 50 years later, with the R 1300 RS.
Along the way, BMW introduced several RS models, including both R boxers and K inline-Fours, each combining sporty performance with long-distance comfort and capability.
Let's take a look back at some of the key milestones from 50 years of the BMW RS.

1976-1984 BMW R 100 RS
The R 100 RS featured an aerodynamic fairing designed using the Pininfarina Wind Tunnel in Grugliasco, Italy. According to BMW, the 980cc Boxer engine produced 70 hp at 7,250 rpm and had a top speed of 200 kph (124 mph).
BMW R 100 RS Nardò Record Bike
In 1977, BMW attempted to set several world records with a modified R 100 RS in Nardò, Italy. Racer Helmut Dähne and engine expert Helmut Bucher managed to increase the maximum output to 84 mph, enough to attain a top speed of over 220 kph (138 mph). Other modifications include a 19-inch rear wheel, and removing the lower fairing section.
The BMW Motorrad team set new world speed records over 10 km and 100 km distances, and i 6 hours, 12 hours, and 24 hours endurance records.
1983-1989 BMW K 100 RS (two-valve)
Facing tightening emissions, BMW developed a new flat-Four engine with a 987cc displacement. The engine debuted in 1982 on the K 100, and at the 1983 Paris Motor Show, BMW introduced the K 100 RS, featuring a new half fairing. BMW claimed the engine produced 90 hp at 8,000 rpm, and a top speed of 220 kph (137 mph). The engine's horizontal configuration made for a low center of gravity, contributing to the K 100 RS' agile handling.
1989-1992 K 100 RS (four-valve)
The original K 100 RS upgraded to a four-valve engine, with technology derived from the K1 sportbike. The new engine had a claimed output of 100 hp at 8,000, with BMW claiming a top speed of 232 kph (144 mhp) for the R 100 RS 4V.
1992-1997 BMW K 1100 RS
In 1992, BMW increased the displacement to 1,092cc and updated the fairings to create the K 1100 RS. BMW claimed an output of 100 hp at 7,500 rpm, with a top speed of 220 kph (137 mph).
1993-2001 BMW R 1100 RS
BMW didn't forget about its traditional Boxer configuration, introducing a new R 1100 RS model in 1993. Its 1,085cc four-valve Boxer four-valve engine used a mix of air and oil cooling, plus fuel injection. The R 1100 RS also introduced another signature BMW technology, employing a Telelever front suspension instead of conventional forks. BMW claims the R 1100 RS produced 90 hp at 7,250 rpm and could reach a top speed of 215 kph (134 mph).
1997-2025 BMW K 1200 RS
After years of voluntarily limiting its motorcycles to a maximum of 100 hp in the German market, BMW introduced the new K 1200 RS, featuring a 1,171cc inline-Four with a claimed output of 130 hp.
2001-2004 BMW R 1150 RS
BMW introduced the R 1150 GS in 1999, but waited for 2001 to introduce the 1,130cc Boxer to a new RS model. BMW claimed a peak output of 95 hp at 7,250 rpm and a top speed of 215 kph (134 mph).
2015-2018 BMW R 1200 RS
BMW eventually adopted liquid-cooling into its Boxer engine, and in 2015, debuted the R 1200 RS. BMW claimed the R 1200 RS' enigne produced 125 hp at 7,750 rpm, enough to reach a claimed top speed of 228 kph (142 mph). The R 1200 RS also introduced BMW's semi-active Dynamic ESA suspension system.
2019-2024 BMW R 1250 RS
The R 1200 platform soon gave way for the R 1250 family, featuring a 1,254cc displacement and ShiftCam variable valve timing. The R 1250 RS also offered an updated Dynamic ESA, a steel main frame, an inverted fork, a single-sided swingarm, and dynamic traction control. BMW claimed the engine produced 136 hp at 7,750 rpm and 105.5 lb-ft. at 6250 rpm. The R 1250 RS had a claimed top speed of over 200 kph (124 mph).
2026+ BMW R 1300 RS
The latest member of the RS lineage, the R 1300 RS lays claim to being the first production motorcycle with a telescopic fork with adjustable spring rate. Other features included an automated shift assistant and the Dynamic Suspension Adjustment system. BMW claims the 1,300cc Boxer engine produces 145 hp at 7,750 rpm and 110 lb-ft. at 6,500 rpm, propelling the R 1300 RS to a claimed top speed of 240 kph (149 mph).
