Bore & Stoke Breakout: Street Tuning vs. Dyno Tuning
Go to any motorcycle forum, and you might see riders debating the golden question of performance modifications: Should I buy an off-the-shelf street tune, or take my bike to a local shop for a custom dyno tune?
While a custom dyno tune sounds superior on paper, in episode six of the Bore and Stoke podcast, Open Flash Performance founder Shiv Pathak warns that a dyno-only calibration often misses 90% of what actually makes a motorcycle rideable.
The Illusion of the Dyno
A dyno is a highly controlled, artificial environment. Unless a tuning shop is equipped with an industrial-grade aviation wind tunnel, it cannot replicate real-world riding conditions.
On a static dyno, there is no genuine ram-air effect pushing into the intake tract at 90 mph. Furthermore, many shops suffer from poor ventilation, meaning the bike is frequently breathing in contaminated, stagnant exhaust gas. Most critically, dyno operators focus almost exclusively on wide-open throttle (WOT) sweeps to maximize peak horsepower numbers.
"Power is the easiest thing to make," says Pathak. "The dyno stuff is the simple part. The hard part is all the nuanced behavior you experience on the road."
The Complexity of the Street
Track riding and dyno testing are highly decisive, predictable environments. You crack the throttle open, chop it shut, brake, and accelerate at identical markers lap after lap.
The street, however, is a chaotic ecosystem of infinite variables. Consider a rider entering a blind, tightening canyon corner:
- You enter with two fingers trailing the front brake.
- You are stuck at a prolonged, ultra-sensitive partial throttle state because you don't know where the corner opens up.
- You are constantly adjusting to shifting ambient temperatures, stop-and-go traffic, and unpredictable throttle roll-ons.
A purely track- or dyno-developed tune ignores cold-start stability, low-speed fueling transitions, and minor hesitations. It leaves the aggressive, jerky factory deceleration fuel cuts intact, which creates a herky-jerky ride when you are trying to maintain a smooth line.
A truly comprehensive tune requires weeks of real-world street logging to smooth out the nested torque tables, ensuring the bike handles predictably in traffic before it ever chases a peak horsepower metric on a roller.

You need to go to reputable, experienced dyno tuners, for example 2 Wheel Dynoworks out of Washington state. They are one, or maybe the best for a whole host of different mfgr';s bikes. Check out theirYoutube channel, ypou'll learn alot. And yes, they race and build engines for professional racers but they also "ride" many of the bikes they tune and know the difference.
Just personal observation but all these electric motors seem to have controllers that regulate limits. Ideally structured to keep temps and speed in optimal general ranges. So those governors can be costing you in ultimate performance while also keeping your battery from turning into a burning ember.
