See Honda’s First Electric Motorcycle Before You’re Suppose To
EV Fun Concept to become reality on Sept. 2
Honda is set to reveal its first full-sized electric motorcycle next week, but we’ve already snagged an early look at the final production model, thanks to design filings released in Australia.
The design filing shows a motorcycle that looks quite close to the EV Fun Concept presented at EICMA, but with enough changes to suggest the filing is for the production model. The license plate holder, turn signals, and reflectors above the front brake calipers — all absent from the concept — are the biggest giveaways, but there are some substantial differences between the filing and the concept.
The headlight unit is significantly larger than the one Honda installed on the EV Fun Concept. It still has the horizontal “visor” light element, but it’s joined by LEDs above and below it, instead of the square bracket design from the Concept.
Above the headlight sits a flyscreen that covers the front of the TFT screen, which is now a rectangular shape instead of the circular display on the EV Fun Concept.
Behind the fork tubes, the filing shows what appears to be an oil cooler. The shrouds protruding from the sides provide the cooler with some protection, and while they have a different shape from the EV Fun Concept, the design filing suggests they will remain transparent.
The bulk of the main body is presumably the battery casing, but the design shows some changes to the bodywork to cover more of it. The motor on the EV Fun Concept was completely concealed, but we can see at least a part of it peaking out from an opening in front of the footpegs. Overall, the bodywork has some softer edges compared to the original concept.
The front wheel has a similar shape as the Concept, but it gains a more practical-looking fender and axle design. The fork looks similar to the 41mm Showa Separate Function Fork—Big Piston (SFF-BP) found on the CB500F, as do the dual Nissin radial-mount four-piston calipers, though the brake rotors have a traditional round design compared to the 500’s petal-shaped discs.
Because there’s no exhaust system, we get an unobstructed view of the single-sided swingarm. The wheel design looks similar to the EV Fun Concept, but with a five-bolt mounting system. On the left side, the swingarm gains some covers to protect the drive belt.
While we now know what Honda’s first full-sized production motorcycle will look like, we still don’t know many technical details. Honda previously stated the EV Fun Concept’s battery is compatible with CCS2 quick chargers and offers a cruising range of over 100 km (62 miles), though we don’t know if that has changed with the production version. The motor’s performance remains a mystery, though the dual disc brakes suggest it’s enough to demand more than a single disc can provide.
We also don’t know what Honda will call it. “EV Fun” might work for a concept, but it’s not a very marketable name. Honda hasn’t submitted any trademark filings that would be an obvious fit. We’ll learn what it’ll be called soon enough, when Honda officially launches its electric motorcycle on September 2.
