Casual comfort comes at a cost

Riding jeans might all look the same to you — I know they did for me — but there’s actually more to them than meets the eye. Take these Cult-8 jeans from Alpinestars for example. Yes, they look like a black pair of jeans, but that alone should be a hint that there’s something different about them. Despite looking more like normal casual wear than traditional motorcycle gear, some riding jeans still look a little funky because of their cut, the armor inside, and/or the amount of seams they have. The Cult-8 really does look like your average pair of non-riding denim. And that’s by design.

In this episode of In Gear, we take a closer look at Alpinestars’ casual-first riding jeans — designed to blend into everyday life while still providing some protection. The Cult-8 aims to strike that balance between comfort, style, and safety, but as always, the real question is: does it actually deliver?

On the surface, the Cult-8 looks like a standard pair of relaxed-fit denim jeans. No flashy branding, no obvious reinforcements — just a clean, modern silhouette that wouldn’t look out of place off the bike. But underneath, the single-layer weave of cotton, polyester, and elastane keeps things lightweight, flexible, and ultra comfortable, while integrated CE-rated Nucleon knee armor adds a layer of impact protection.

That minimalist approach comes with trade-offs, though. Its single layer construction means there isn’t another layer (usually Kevlar) dedicated to abrasion resistance. These aren’t built for aggressive canyon carving (though I’ve done it and taken the gamble) — they’re aimed at urban riders, commuters, and anyone who wants gear they can wear all day without a second thought. The question becomes less about ultimate protection and more about usability: how often will you actually choose to wear them?

In the video, I break down everything you need to know — from fit and comfort to on-bike ergonomics and real-world practicality. If you’ve seen any video of me riding a motorcycle on the street over the past year or so, there’s a very high likelihood that I’m wearing these jeans. The comfort keeps me coming back.
