A New Contender For The Middleweight Crown?

Triumph’s Trident 800 occupies an intriguing spot in the company’s lineup. Off the top, it looks familiar, sharing its chassis roots with the Trident 660 that helped reestablish Triumph in the approachable middleweight category. That bike carved out a reputation as a polished, unintimidating entry point into triple-cylinder ownership.

The 800, however, changes the conversation entirely. By fitting their 798cc Triple into that compact, upright platform, Triumph effectively creates a bridge between entry-level middleweights and the brand’s larger, more performance-focused offerings.

When our own Ryan Adams rode the 2026 Triumph Trident 800 for the first time, it raised some natural questions about positioning: where does this bike sit for buyers now faced with more choices than ever in the sub-liter class?

What the Trident 800 appears to offer is a step up in performance without abandoning the easygoing ergonomics that made the 660 appealing. The upright seating position, neutral handling, and manageable proportions remain intact, but the larger Triple promises stronger acceleration and a broader powerband. It’s an everyday package, but one with noticeably more headroom.

In a segment that’s becoming increasingly crowded, the Trident 800 seems designed for riders who’ve outgrown the entry-level tier but aren’t ready – or willing – to commit to something heavier, like Triumph's Speed Triple.

I'll stick with my 990 Duke for all around performance fun. But, it will be an interesting shoot out between the two. Again tho, my money is on the 990 to be the clear winner.
