What's Better: Micro Ratchet vs. Double-D Ring Helmet Strap
The classic double D-ring system has long been favored for its simplicity and proven safety record, while the micro ratchet buckle appeals to those who want convenience and quick release. Each has its loyal following, often divided along lines of tradition versus modern practicality—sometimes it even strays into regional differences.
In this case, the question wasn’t about protection or comfort, but speed. Which system gets you ready to ride more quickly?
Watch below as Ryan Adams puts Shoei's Micro Ratchet up against a traditional double D-ring in a test of speed:
The right answer for you may depend on muscle memory as much as the actual mechanism, but Ryan's test shows that even in something as routine as securing a helmet, some riders will always value saving seconds.
Of course, none of this really matters if you're heading to the race track, as micro ratchets aren't allowed.

After decades of relying on the double D-rings, I decided to give the micro ratcheting design a try, due to some arthritis issues. After about a year of using the ratcheting design, I removed it and went back to the double D-rings. The ratcheting type just didn't feel as safe as the D-rings, not to mention that the metal ratchet occasionally scratched my face when removing my helmet. Definitely D-rings for me!
Been riding over 55 years. Never had any D-ring system even show any signs of wear over the years. Never had any problems putting on or taking off and adjusts perfect every time. Have 1 helmet with the plastic ratchet system showing obvious signs of wear after a year. My full face road helmet and 9S-Flex for off road have D-rings. Won’t buy a helmet that has a ratchet buckle.
